Claiming Childcare on Income Tax

I was babysitting for this couple( I have since retired) who had their second child and the dad worked but the mom was on maternity leave and they brought the oldest child here so it would be easier on mom and when they paid me every 2 weeks I gave them receipts. Can they claim that money even though mom wasnt working at this time? She still doesnt go back till Jan
I thought a parent could claim it to allow them to go back to work or am I wrong? If a parent is home on maternity leave why should the other parent have the right to claim it or am I totally wrong with this? Also if they cant claim it do I have to claim it?

I think whoever has the lower income claims it on their taxes, it doesnt matter if she was working or not, it is still a deduction for that family. But you will definately have to claim it as income either way.

If you gave them receipts, then you have to claim as income and they can claim as a deduction (the parent with the lowest income)

no it cannot be claimed.... well they could try but Revenue Canada will not accept it. Childcare expenses are a deduction only if you r working. (in this case both parents would have to be working and the parent with the lowest income claims the amount)
You could off set the amount paid to you, by the expenses u incured.
